Electronic Weighbridges

Pit Type Weighbridge

A pit-type electronic weighbridge is installed flush with the surrounding road surface, meaning the entire weighing platform sits inside a pre-excavated concrete pit. Because the deck matches the road level, trucks can approach from any angle or direction without requiring steep access ramps. This design is ideal for facilities with severe space constraints or multi-directional traffic.

Installation Requirements & Steps

Proper site execution determines the long-term accuracy and survival of a pit-type weighbridge.

  • Soil & Site Assessment: Prior to digging, perform soil-bearing capacity tests. Clay or loose soil requires enhanced reinforcement to avoid foundation settling, which ruins weight calibrations.
  • Civil Excavation & Formwork: Complete earthwork excavation based on the exact dimensions of the platform (e.g., a standard 18m x 3m deck). Retaining walls must be poured using high-grade structural concrete (typically M25 or M30 grade RCC) to resist lateral ground pressure.
  • Mandatory Drainage System: Because the system is below ground, the pit must feature a slope leading to a dedicated catch pit equipped with an automated submersible drainage pump. Accumulating water will rust components and short-circuit electronic load cells.
  • Manhole / Service Access: The design must include side clearances or dedicated manhole entries to allow maintenance crews to access, clean, and service the load cells inside the pit.
  • Electrical & Grounding Protection: A minimum of two independent chemical earth pits (<5 ohms resistance) must be installed to safely route lightning strikes and electrical surges away from the digital indicator and load cells.
