Tank Weighing Systems

Tank Weighing Systems

A tank weighing system (also called a silo or vessel weighing system) transforms a liquid or solid storage container into an accurate industrial scale. Instead of relying on level sensors or ultrasonic dipsticks—which can be thrown off by foam, internal vapor, or changes in material density—a tank weighing system places structural load cells directly beneath the legs or support lugs of the vessel. This gives a direct, highly precise measurement of the material's actual mass. These systems are critical in chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing, and cement production.

Product Description

How the System is Built

A complete system consists of three core components:

  • Load Cell Modules: Specially designed mounting kits that contain the actual weight sensors. These assemblies sit between the tank legs and the concrete foundation. They include built-in constraints to prevent the tank from tipping or shifting due to wind or thermal expansion.
  • Junction Box (J-Box): A highly sealed enclosure (typically IP67 or IP68 stainless steel) that collects the individual electrical signals from each leg’s load cell, balances them, and sends a single unified signal to the control room.
  • Weight Indicator / Controller: A digital panel that displays the current weight. Modern indicators output data directly to factory automation networks via protocols like Modbus, Profibus, 4-20mA analogue loops, or Ethernet/IP.

Load Cell Placement Rules

Vertical Cylindrical Tanks (Leg Support): Typically require 3 or 4 load cells (one under each leg). Three legs are mathematically self-levelling and highly stable. Four legs are used for larger, top-heavy structures but require careful shim adjustments to ensure even weight distribution.
